Pills (2) – Written by Sheila J.

Junior High

My mouth began to salivate as I held my hands over my stomach. Tried to block numerous fists and shoes from making contact with me. I was getting hit and kicked so hard I thought my breakfast was going to come up through my esophagus.

It was common for my peers to taunt me. I looked different. I was a black kid with curly red hair, blue eyes and freckles. To top it off I had a metal mouth and stuttered when I was nervous.

I was nervous often.

I was getting my ass beat like a piñata at a birthday party. And if that wasn’t bad enough, they decided to dump the entire contents of my backpack on the black top as well.

Most importantly… my pills.

I hadn’t taken them this morning. I forgot. And if I didn’t get them in my bloodstream soon I’d start to forget everything I knew. Everything they taught me.

My parents.

I didn’t have long before my head would start throbbing. Didn’t have long before the cramping would clench my abdomen. The dizziness would set in. Blank spaces would fill my head and my brain would began to deprogram.

I couldn’t let that happen.

The first bell rang and I took one last kick to my back before they walked away laughing. With the small amount of strength I had left in my body I crawled over to my now crushed pills. I put my head down and ate them off of the ground.
